Helping Your Child Become a Responsible Pet Owner

Having a pet during childhood can have many benefits. Pets help teach children about companionship, responsibility, and accountability. As a parent, it’s up to you to show your child how to properly care for the family pet, so your child and your pet can thrive. Continue reading for some tips on helping your child become a responsible pet owner.

Teach Them Appropriate Feeding Guidelines

Children have a habit of helping pets overindulge. Whether it’s reaching into the treat bag or dropping scraps from the dinner table, children love to treat family pets—and no pet is likely to complain about the extra treats! However, too many treats can be harmful for your pet, especially if your child is dropping food from their own plate.

Learning about appropriate portion sizes and treats for your pet is a good opportunity for your child to learn about the value of eating a healthy diet for themselves. Teach your child how to properly feed and treat your pet and show them other ways to show their love to the family cat or dog, such as belly rubs or a good game of fetch.

Make Exercise a Family Activity

Physical activity is important for all pets, and it’s important for kids too. So, it’s helpful to make your pet’s exercise routine a family activity. If you have a dog, they’ll love a daily walk with the whole family. Cats may enjoy playing with wands and other toys. Some cats may even respond positively to leash training, so they can safely get outside and explore the neighborhood. Whatever your pet’s exercise routine is, get your kids involved to show them the value of physical activity and consistent daily routines.

Involve Your Child in Your Pet’s Grooming

All pets need regular grooming like brushing, baths, and tooth brushing. Involve your child in these activities. Younger kids may be best off observing or handing you the right tools to groom your pet, while older kids can begin taking on grooming tasks themselves with your supervision. Helping your pet stay clean and tidy will show your child the value of personal hygiene and self-care.
