Addressing Behavior Issues in Pets

Just like humans, pets have annoying or destructive habits that can make living with them difficult. Once you learn the right tools to use to address behavior issues in your pets, you can discourage unwanted behavior and reinforce wanted behavior. Here are a couple things you can look for when trying to curb unwanted behavior in your pet:

Provide Stimulation and Activity

One of the most common reasons for bad behavior in cats and dogs is boredom. When you’re often away from your home, or your pet doesn’t get enough stimulation or activity during the day, he may act out or use his pent-up energy in a destructive way. Play with your pet for at least an hour every day, preferably right before feeding him. If you have a dog, combine one hour of play time with a long walk. If you have to leave your pet alone for more than three hours, give him an interactive game, toy, or puzzle to play with while you’re out.

Evaluate Your Pet’s Diet

Another reason your pet may be acting out is his diet. Your pet has different nutritional needs than you do, and getting too many or not enough calories can affect his mood dramatically. Your pet may need different food or added vitamins or supplements to maintain his health, or may have food sensitivities or allergies that are affecting his behavior. Your veterinarian can determine if your pet has any special dietary needs.

Seek Professional Guidance

If you feel overwhelmed about trying to address your pet’s behavioral issues alone, you can always seek professional guidance from a veterinarian or trainer. They can evaluate your pet’s behavior and use their expertise to help you uncover the underlying cause of your pet’s bad habits.

If your pet is exhibiting aggression or dangerous behavior, you should visit your veterinarian right away.
