Common Causes for Itchy Pets

Just like humans, dogs and cats can suffer from skin irritations and allergic itch including rashes, bug bites, and dermatitis. Here is a look at some of the possible causes for your itchy pets:

Insect Bites

Fleas and ticks can all have irritating bites that can potentially lead to other more serious health issues. With regular grooming and flea and tick prevention, you can keep your pet safe from these pests year-round.

Sensitivity to Food

If you think that your pet’s itching is related to a food allergy be sure to discuss treatment options with your veterinarian, whether a prescription diet and/or medication may be the right fit for your pet.

Outdoor and Indoor Allergens

A common cause of itching in pets is contact and inhaled allergens. Outdoor allergens include pollen and plants. Indoor allergens include dust mites and molds. Some shampoos, pesticides, and carpet cleaners may also have ingredients that cause itching in your pet. A combination of topical therapy, parasite control, bathing, and oral medications is often necessary to control symptoms caused by contact and inhaled allergens.
